Open-source remote laboratory experiments for controls engineering education

We describe and evaluate the use of a remote laboratory with approximately 250 third-year students in ‘Controls Instrumentation Engineering 3’ course School at University Edinburgh. The was created using first iteration new open-source infrastructure. A key component implementation is secure video data relay that permits experiments to be hosted on restricted networks accessed from wide range browsers, so as minimise technical support burden staff. heterogeneous set twelve spinning disks driven by DC motors were provided via an online catalogue permitting instant exclusive access individual experiment for up 90 min session. student experience evaluated survey, which comprised both qualitative quantitative questions. Survey participation optional included some in-depth questions targeting students’ UX perspective. link between results allows us draw useful conclusions about experiences participating survey. Our main findings are overall positive survey respondents, they perceive distinction having control over equipment task. work indicates there need better understand implications making this distinction, effect it will have future designs tasks, user interfaces, evaluations.
